The Nether Tickets

Video projections have now become an integral part of many West End shows, with some using it effectively and a few, let's face it, using it as a desperate gimmick to liven up a dull plot. Sometimes I feel I might have been better off staying home and watching a dvd such is the often overuse of projections and video effects. Miss Saigon, Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys and We Will Rock You are all shows where the use of video has been seamlessly merged into the story without making people forget they are in a theatre and not actually in a cinema. You can't liven up a dud with a few jazzy effects. Remember: story story story.

If you had the chance to give up your real life, and become a completely different person - doing anything you wanted, without fear of consequences - would you do it? This is one of the many questions posed by The Nether, now showing at the Duke Of York's Theatre a deeply disturbing and thought-provoking look at a not-too-distant future.

I'd seen a lot of writing about The Nether when it was at the Royal Court. So when I heard it was moving into the West End I was quick to secure a ticket through LondonTheatreDirect.

Other than the fact that it had won awards for design and that it had transferred from the Royal Court, I really knew nothing about The Nether when I sat in my seat at the Duke Of York's Theatre ready for curtain up. It's nice to do this occasionally rather than having to do a mountain of homework before watching each show. What an interesting and very different experience I was treated to!
